GSS Applications

When choosing a supplier it is recommended to request Film specifications and Certificate of Origin, this will assist to make an informed decision and to eliminate the chances of installing inferior products.

The GSS System has a number of applications to suit varying security needs:

  • Upgrade ordinary glass to safety glass

System: Class 100 on 4mm (and thicker) ordinary glass

By applying GSS Class 100 to ordinary glass, the system makes the glass more difficult to break during impact. Even if the glass breaks, the GSS System does not allow stretch, which restricts the number of sharp pieces of glass that can cut and injure. The system also holds the glass together.

This system is meant for accidental breakage such as golf / cricket balls and accidental human impact onto the glass.

Safety Compliance in older buildings now no longer necessitates the replacement of older non-safety glass in key public areas, as GSS can be retrofitted.

  • Upgrade ordinary glass to high impact, intruder resistant safety glass

System: Class 200 on 4mm (and thicker) ordinary glass

GSS Class 200 can be applied to new or existing residential and commercial glass. This level of protection is designed for where glass breakage is imminent and likely to occur. Due to the thicker, double ply system, it is more difficult to cut or puncture the system, making it virtually impenetrable. Due to the superior bond with the glass, a layer of glass is normally left on the film, making it difficult to cut.

This system buys significant time when an intruder is attempting to enter, requiring multiple hits, compared to other security system like burglar bars or ordinary safety film. These security structures also leave homeowners feeling “trapped / imprisoned” in their homes and GSS offers a more aesthetically pleasing security alternative – especially for preserving panoramic views.

This system will also help to protect from gunfire, by restricting glass shrapnel and slowing the bullet down = "non-lethal penetration".

GSS system also has compliance applications in terms of new building regulations, with respect to the renovation of older buildings, where the glass used was not originally of a sufficient safety standard. It is now no longer necessary to replace the existing glass, as GSS can be used to upgrade the glass to an acceptable safety level for certain key public areas. The energy efficiency aspect (specifications available) also contribute to a Green Star Rating.

 Soldier

  • Upgrade ordinary glass to bullet resistant glass

GSS reduces the effects of an explosion due to its ability to absorb a large portion of the resultant shock wave (positive and negative pressures). GSS Ballistic Protection implies that the glass is prevented from exploding and the first three projectiles, within an eight inch diameter circle and from a distance of 7.62m, will according to laboratory and ballistics tests done – alter the trajectory of the bullet; greatly diminish velocity;   and, possibly even result in projectile splintering - all of which, greatly reduce loss of life.  This is referred to as “Non-Lethal Penetration,” which exponentially decreases fatal injuries.

NOTE: Dynamics of ballistic resistance (variation in ballistic load and test conditions) imply that references can be made from similar testing.

System: Class 400 or 525 on 12mm thick ordinary glass

When applied to 12mm thick glass, this system will upgrade that glass into bullet resistant glass – tested to resist small hand gun (9mm) fire.

System: Class 400 or 525 on 25mm thick (laminates) glass

When applied to two pieces of glass (making up a total of 25mm), treated with Class 400 or 525, that glass system will be upgraded into bullet resistant safety glass – tested to resist large hand gun fire.

Increased levels of ballistic protection is possible with double – glazing:  two pieces of 6mm or 8mm glass, each protected with 400 or 525, is “sandwiched” together with an argon air space in between - effectively “armouring” the glass system to withstand severe ballistic attacks, even automatic rifle fire. (Ballistic Chart available)

System: Class 400 on ordinary automotive glass

When applied to ordinary automotive glass, GSS Class 400 has been tested to successfully resist a single shot from a 38 special.

Double-glazing options also available for more specialised levels of protection.

  •  Superior vehicle glass protection

System: Class 200 on automotive glass - "Anti-theft"; "Anti-attack" and not just normal "smash 'n grab"

When applied to automotive glass, the GSS Class 200 system will provide 10x more protection than ordinary safety film of similar thickness.

This is due to the superior bond, which better maintains the structure/integrity of the glass during an attack, and therefore better holds the glass together in its frame. It will also resist petrol bomb attacks to keep fire damage on the outside of the vehicle.

GSS Tint / Solar Films

GSS Tint / Solar film enhances the appearance of your property while protecting you from harmful UV rays, rejecting solar heat and cooling inside temperature, while offering privacy in your home or office. Cooler interior temperatures assist in reduced air conditioning costs and decreased emissions, assisting environmental conservation.

GSS films block 99% of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, and effectively help to reduce fading of colours, protecting valuable furnishings, upholstery, and even wooden floors.

Benefits of installing GSS Films

  • Intruder Resistant
  • Block the Heat, Maintain the View
  • Assist Environmental Conservation
  • Improve Comfort
  • Protect against fading
  • Improve Natural Lighting

  •  Other Benefits

The GSS system also offers UV protection, noise reduction, energy efficiency (restricts heat transfer) and other benefits related to window films.

By applying GSS film (Class 200) to the interior side/surface of residential and commercial glass (6 mm or thicker) the following benefits are applicable with regards to Energy Efficiency (GSR):

  • 99% UV rejection is standard in all GSS films

  • Winter U-value of 1.05

  • Shading Co-efficient of 0.92

  • 20% Total Solar Energy Rejection

A range of architectural films are available for greater solar protection, increased privacy (reflective films) and even for aesthetically “colouring” glass.
